The story of the SOOF lift blepharoplasty

A revolutionary way to lift the eyelid

This is the story of how a doctor in Charlotte developed an entirely new medical procedure — the SOOF lift blepharoplasty, a new direction in facial plastic surgery.

Blepharoplasty is surgery on the eyelids. It can reverse many of the effects of aging. Most people are familiar with the wrinkles at the edge of the eye called crows-feet, but there are other effects as well. As we age, a tiny deposit of fat under our eyelids called the suborbicular oculi fat (or SOOF) sinks to the tops of our cheeks as the tissue that should hold it in place, called the fascial layer, relaxes. This creates a puffy appearance right under the eyes. The usual approach surgeons take is to make an incision under the eyelashes of the lower lid, lift the skin and muscle and remove the fat. This is called an open lower lid blepharoplasty, and it gets rid of wrinkles, but the absence of the fat gives a hollow look to the lower eyelid and tear trough. Sometimes the surgeon replaces this deposit of fat with a deposit of fat taken from another part of the body, but the effect does not always last, and the new deposit puts pressure on the support structure of the lower lid which can cause it to pull away from the eyeball.

The SOOF lift

Seeing that the traditional form of eye lid surgery was not doing a good enough job, the most experienced plastic surgeon in Charlotte developed a new form of surgery, the SOOF lift blepharoplasty. In this procedure, the surgeon tackles the sinking fat problem directly. He or she makes the initial incision on the inside of the eyelid, lifts the suborbicularis oculi fat back into place and tightens the fascial layer in order to hold it in place.

This subtle change in the structure of the face results in a more effective restoration of the original, youthful appearance of the eyes. A SOOF lift blepharoplasty makes not only the lower eyelid, but the whole middle of the face, look younger.

Getting a SOOF lift blepharoplasty in Charlotte

The doctor who developed the SOOF lift blepharoplasty as an alternative to the traditional procedure is none other than Dr. M. Sean Freeman of Charlotte. He has been certified by two different surgery boards, the American Board of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Since 1988 he has done nothing but facial plastic surgery, including eyelid surgeries, and has often taught this procedure to other surgeons.
