The SignatureLift and other facelifts

What everyone should know about facelifts

The facelift is one of the most common types of cosmetic surgery, but individual facelifts are very different from one another. The goal is to restore the original, youthful appearance of the face. but no two faces are alike even at the stage of new adulthood, and individual patterns of aging are all slightly different. So every face lift has to be individually tailored to the patient. A face lift is often performed in conjunction with other facial plastic surgical procedures, such as an endoscopic brow lift or eyelid surgery.

One broad category of facelift is the deep plane facelift. This kind of facelift allows an elevation of the soft tissues of the midface and lower face without a “pulled” appearance. It’s different from the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) lift that many surgeons favor. The disadvantage of the SMAS lift is that it can easily be overdone, creating a wind-tunnel effect. A deep plane lift requires greater skill, but looks more natural and lasts longer. After a deep plane facelifts, you should be able to return to normal activity within two weeks, but it may be several weeks before your face looks the way you want it to.

The SignatureLift and facelifts

Dr. Sean Freeman of Charlotte has developed a procedure called the SignatureLift, which is well suited to younger patients or to those who have already had face lifts. It is similar to the “weekend face lift” you may have heard about. Unlike a deep plane facelift, it can be performed under sedation rather than general anesthesia, with a much quicker recovery time — most patients can get back to normal activity after only a few days. Sutures are visible for five to six days but can be hidden by longer hair.

The process starts during the initial consultation. Dr. Freeman does a thorough physical examination of the patient’s face, assessing the thickness, texture and elasticity of his or her skin, and the severity of wrinkles and folds on the patient’s face. He pays particular attention to the hairline, finding the best places to make incisions where they will let him reach the needed areas without being too conspicuous.
