The deep plane minituck restores youth to the midface

Rejuvenating the midface

We know when we’re looking older, but we don’t often think about exactly what the signs of aging are. One of the things surgeons have learned more recently is that the signs of aging are created not just by sagging skin, but by loss of volume in the midface due to deposits of fat shrinking and migrating downwards. The endotine face lift, a procedure that involves absorbable implants under the skin, can be used to reverse this in a variety of different parts of the face, but the effect is only short-term. Injections of fat are another way of restoring volume.

If this skin around your mouth and neck is especially lax, you might be a good candidate for a deep plane minituck. The looseness around your neck should be caused by skin and muscle only. It should not be caused by excess fat under the neck, looseness of the submandibular glands or both. A facial plastic surgeon can tell you if the procedure is right for you, or if you need a different one.

How a deep plane minituck is done

In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision around the ear, then lifts the connective tissue under the skin of the cheeks and releases the ligaments to perform a deep plane lift on the lines of the jaw, jowl and mouth. The malar pad, the fatty tissue under the skin of the upper cheek, may also be lifted. This lets the face look naturally younger rather than stretched or unnatural.

After surgery, your doctor will tell you what to do until your recovery is complete. You should be able to return to normal activity after 10 to 14 days. Wait for the swelling to go down before you decide if you like your new look. This can take several weeks, so be patient.
