Rhinoplasty can’t be rushed

After your nose gets hurt

Rhinoplasty is most often done for aesthetic reasons — to improve the line or reduce the size of a perfectly functional nose. Sometimes it’s done to fix an old injury from childhood or even childbirth.

And sometimes it’s done because of a recent injury. When a nose is broken and not set properly right away, people often want it fixed as soon as possible. No two surgeons deal with the problem in exactly the same way, and everything depends on the timing and nature of the injury. If the bones are displaced rather than broken, a closed reduction can be performed within a week of the injury, but results may not be entirely predictable.

In most cases, a surgeon would rather wait for the nose to heal from the original injury before performing any surgery. One of the problems that people have after rhinoplasty is that their nose is so swollen and bruised that they can’t tell what it’s going to look like when the swelling goes down. If you go into a surgeon’s office with a bruised and swollen nose, your surgeon will have the same problem. Waiting for the swelling to subside already takes four to six weeks. Depending on the nature of the injuries, it may be a good idea to wait even longer. The longer you let your nose heal, the more predictable the results will be. Only an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon can give you more specific advice on the timing that you can use.

How you can prepare for rhinoplasty

In this case, you have an advantage over a lot of rhinoplasty patients — you know exactly what you want and how well it would work on your face. If you smoke, stop smoking, because nicotine makes blood vessels contract and slows healing. Don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen — they thin the blood slightly and cause more bleeding. Avoid vitamin E or herbal supplements for the same reason. Cut back on salt the day before surgery. Make sure you have someone to drive you home afterward.
