What makes a nose masculine or feminine
One request that rhinoplasty surgeons sometimes get is for a patient’s nose to look more “masculine” or “feminine.” If you don’t spend a lot of time looking at other people’s noses, this may seem strange, but if you have ever felt that your own nose looks too heavy or too delicate, you’ll understand.
Male skin tends to be a little bit thicker and more oily than female skin. This blunts some of the sharp angles, give the nose a less delicate appearance and makes it harder for a surgeon to achieve precise results. The bridge of a man’s nose is usually straighter and more prominent, and the tip is not elevated as much. But only an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon who has worked on thousands of different faces can develop a strong enough sense of these differences to operate upon a nose in such a way that most people would say it looks more masculine or feminine.
How to get the right results
So if you’re talking with your surgeon about what sort of changes you’d like to your nose, you need to be very clear on what you want. One of the best ways to guarantee good results of a rhinoplasty is to use computer imaging to study the face in three dimensions. Some doctors use 3D printers to create models of the patient’s face with a new nose. This has the advantage of being available to examine in real space rather than via a computer screen, but the disadvantage of being more expensive and harder to change. A 3D image on the computer can be adjusted until it’s just what the patient wants.
Be sure you’re ready for a rhinoplasty when it’s scheduled to be performed. Two weeks before the procedure, stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E or herbal supplements, and if you smoke, stop. The day before surgery cut back on salt in your food, and make sure you have someone to drive you home and help you out for the next few days. Your surgeon will have advice on how to take care of yourself after the surgery until your nose is fully healed.
