Nose jobs have a track record of success
According to a study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, an average of 3.3 percent of rhinoplasties (about one in thirty) need revision for nose job, and according to the Web site Real Self, 89% of those who rated their rhinoplasties in the last two years said that they were worth it. Considering that over a hundred thousand people in America get nose jobs every year, this is an amazingly good track record.
This is particularly important since the nose is such an essential feature — right in the middle of the face, where its size and shape can mean the difference between seeing oneself as beautiful and seeing oneself as embarrassingly unattractive. Just to make things more complicated, not everyone wants the same kind of nose. A quick Google search will tell you there are six different types of noses… or 12, or 13, or 14. The broadest categories of human nose shape are “flat,” “concave,” “convex” and “straight.” (There is also “wavy,” but this is usually counted as a deformity rather than a type.) Recent research has shown that people whose ancestors come from cold, dry climates tend to have noses with longer, higher and narrower nasal cavities than those whose ancestors come from hot, humid climates. This probably helps to heat and humidify the air before it enters the lungs. There was a time when facial plastic surgeons usually gave their patients the “straight” nose whether it suited them or not. Modern cosmetic surgeons are more respectful.
Getting a nose job
Before you get a nose job, stop smoking and don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen. Get someone to drive you home from the operation. After surgery, there’s a certain amount of swelling, moderate bruising and sometimes some temporary skin numbness. The bruising goes away within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last several weeks. Some have begun using the Internet to document their own nose jobs and recoveries for their friends. Don’t jump to any conclusions about what your new nose will look like until the swelling has gone down completely.
