Two different kinds of lip enhancement
According to the cosmetic surgery website realself.com, 92% of those who get lip augmentation and 85% of those who get lift lips consider them “worth it.” A lip enhancement is a small change in your appearance that can have a big impact. Only a facial plastic surgeon with a lot of experience can tell you which type of lip enhancement is right for you.
Lip augmentation
If you just need your lips to be slightly fuller, this can be done simply by injecting them with a filler, like body fat or hyaluronic acid products such as Restylane. New fillers based on hyaluronic acid are coming out onto the market, such as Volbella which is specifically intended for lip lines. Ask your facial plastic surgeon if he or she would recommend them in your case. The swelling wears off after a day or two.
For more improvement, the surgeon may use a dermal allograft, in which dermal collagen from a donor is transplanted into your lips. It takes longer to recover from this, but the good news is that a dermal allograft is permanent — the collagen, with no skin cells of its own, easily becomes a part of your own tissue. Ask your facial plastic surgeon for more details.
The lip lift
A lip lift, unlike augmentation, doesn’t add volume to the lips. What it does is balance the upper and lower lips in cases where the upper lip is a little too narrow. Facial plastic surgeons have found that the perfect balance is for the upper lip to take up about a third of the space between the base of the nose and the tip of the chin. So the surgeon adjusts the shape of the upper lip to tighten it and bring it out a little more. This can usually be done in the surgeon’s office, with only a little swelling and bruising visible — plus the sutures, of course. Don’t put on makeup until they’re out. This should take five or six days.
