Lip enhancement a small change with a big effect

Types of lip enhancement

The lips and the eyes are the parts of the face that draw the most attention — the simplest caricatures of human faces consist of eyes and a mouth. Improvements to the eyes (though not the eyelids) are outside the realm of cosmetic surgery, but lip enhancement is very much an option. A very slight plumping or reshaping of the lips can have a surprisingly positive effect on your appearance, and most people who get this surgery are very pleased with the results. Two common types of lip enhancement are lip augmentation and lip lifts.

Lip augmentation or lip enhancement

A small, temporary augmentation of the lips can be made using an injection of a filler. Body fat is one filler sometimes used, along with Restylane and other hyaluronic acid fillers. There will be some swelling, but it will wear off after a couple of days. Unfortunately, at some point the treatment itself will wear off.

If you want a more permanent improvement, you can get a dermal allograft, in which dermal collagen from a donor is transplanted into your lips. Unlike many forms of donated tissue, there’s no danger of rejection — collagen has no DNA, and is the same from one person to another. It will in time become a part of your own lips as if it had grown there.

Lip lifts

A lip lift is a very small surgical change, intended to widen an upper lip that is just a little too narrow. The surgeon makes a gull-wing-shaped incision under the nose, removing excess skin and tightening the muscles, which brings out the upper lip. The goal is for the upper lip to take up about a third of the space between the base of the nose and the tip of the chin. A lip lift can usually be performed in the surgeon’s office, and there’s only a little swelling and bruising afterward. Sutures are taken out in five or six days.
