When to consider lip enhancement
Lip enhancement or augmentation increases the size of your lips and can reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles around your mouth. You may get lip enhancement treatment for either the upper or lower lips or for both. In Charlotte NC, Dr. M. Sean Freeman, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon performs lip enhancement procedures with either injectable fillers or surgical implants. Surgical implants for lip enhancement are typically permanent, while injectable fillers are temporary and will need to be repeated to sustain the effects.
Injectable fillers
Dr. Freeman uses injectable fillers to provide a more subtle improvement in the appearance of the lips. During the initial consultation appointment, Dr. Freeman will discuss the patient’s goals for their lip enhancement procedure and help them decide upon the right procedures to reach their goals. There are a wide variety of injectable fillers available for lip enhancements. Depending upon the patient’s desired results, Dr. Freeman may use a hyaluronic acid product such as Restylane® or another type of injectable filler. He may also perform fat injections for lip enhancements. Dr. Freeman can perform lip enhancements with injectable fillers at his state-of-the-art clinic in Charlotte. This is an outpatient procedure and is typically done with local anesthesia. The patient will usually have some swelling for 24 to 48 hours following treatment with injectable fillers.
Lip enhancement surgery
Dr. Freeman uses dermal allograft for implants during lip enhancement surgery. He believes this is the best material for augmenting lips because it provides a more natural look. Dermal allografts are procured from human tissue and have been used in surgical procedures for many years. All dermal allografts used by Dr. Freeman are from quality providers within the United States. Surgical implants are performed at Dr. Freeman’s clinic in Charlotte NC. It is an outpatient procedure and most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few days. One of the benefits of using allograft dermis during lip enhancement is that the material may be rolled, stacked or folded to provide just the right amount and type of enhancement. After the allograft dermis is transplanted into the patient, it eventually becomes a part of that patient’s own tissue. The allograft dermis will then act just like the patient’s normal tissue.
The lip lift
Often, a patient will come to Dr. Freeman unhappy with their overall facial appearance. When they meet with Dr. Freeman during their initial consultation appointment, Dr. Freeman evaluates their face for facial balance, looking for a one to two-thirds balance between the length of their upper lip and their lower lip and chin. This means the upper lip should be no more than 2/3 as long as the lower lip. When the upper lip is too long or too thin, Dr. Freeman may recommend a lip lift.
