Common reasons for a nose job
In 2014, 150,000 people had rhinoplasty done. Some of the common reasons for a nose job are to reduce the prominence of a nasal hump, change the size of the tip of the nose or the direction in which the tip points, or straighten a deviated septum — but every case is different, starting with a unique nose with its own history and ending when the swelling goes down and the patient is (hopefully) happy. If not, a nose job can be done to improve on the results of the last nose job. This is called a revision rhinoplasty, and it requires a very skillful surgeon. It is best for the patient to wait a year between nose jobs. In cases of severe damage, an implant may be needed. Fortunately, this is rare, and such implants can be created through modern 3-D printing.
Every rhinoplasty is different
Noses come in many shapes and sizes. The skin is thicker in some places, thinner in others — and is usually thicker in men than in women. The general rule is that the thicker the skin, the thinner the cartilage underneath. The cartilage and bone that form the structure of the nose are what the surgeon operates on, unless there’s a scar on the nose that needs revising.
In about one in five cases, the patient should get a chin implant in addition to the nose job — or even instead of the nose job. Accentuating the chin gives balance to the face, making a seemingly large nose appear to be a more reasonable size.
Before the surgery, make sure you and your surgeon are on exactly the same page as to what you want your new nose to look like. Computer imaging can help with this. Get someone to drive you home from the surgery. After the rhinoplasty, there tends to be swelling, moderate bruising and sometimes temporary skin numbness. All of these effects go away fairly quickly — the bruising fades within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last for several weeks. Don’t do anything to put pressure on your nose until it’s completely healed.
