Find out if a minituck is right for you

A minituck or a regular facelift?

Since every part of the face ages in slightly different ways, every part needs slightly different cosmetic procedures to make it look younger. The brow lift and the neck lift are for the forehead and neck, respectively. The eyelids have two different forms of surgery associated with them — one for the upper eyelids, one for the lower. And for the midface area, there’s the deep plane minituck, which lifts sagging skin and corrects loss of volume in the midface. Chances are you’ll want some combination of these to make your whole face look younger.

If you’re interested in a facelift, a facial plastic surgeon can tell you what kind of facelift is right for you. The key difference between a minituck and a regular facelift is the amount of surgery done around the neck. Too much extra skin or fat around the neck means that a deep plane facelift needs to be done. If there is only a little sagging of the muscles, a minituck may be enough. There are also short-term procedures, such as an endotine face lift which is done using absorbable implants under the skin. Injections of fat are another way of restoring volume to the midface.

How a surgeon does a deep plane minituck

First the surgeon makes an incision around the ear. He or she then lifts the connective tissue under the skin of the cheeks and releases the ligaments, lifting the lines of the jaw, jowl and mouth, and possibly the subcutaneous fat. This helps the face appear younger in a way that doesn’t look unnatural or stretched. You should be able to return to normal activity in about two weeks, if you follow your doctor’s advice. Don’t worry too much about how you look until the swelling has gone down.
