Eye lift frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about an eye lift

How can I be sure if I need an eye lift?

Only a facial plastic surgeon can tell you for sure. Sometimes, what appears to be a sagging upper eyelid may in fact be a sagging brow intruding on the eyelids. As you age, the skin on your forehead gradually sags downward and slightly to the center, forcing its way into the space of the upper eyelids. In these cases, an endoscopic brow lift will correct the problem.

If I do need an eye lift, how should I prepare for one?

If you want to undergo an eye lift, you should be in good health, with no medical conditions such as blurry vision, dry eye, double vision, diabetes or thyroid problems. A good rule for any plastic surgery is that if you smoke, you should stop before undergoing it, because smoking makes your body heal slower. Don’t take aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs just before the surgery. Tell your surgeon about any other medications you are taking, and follow his or her advice on taking them before surgery.

How do I manage the recovery, and how long will it take?

Patients can be back to normal in less than a week or as much as a month. Younger patients heal quicker than older patients, and patients who bleed less during the procedures suffer less bruising afterward. Stitches, if used, should be gone before the end of the first week. The bruising is the last thing to heal, but can be covered with makeup.

A lot depends on precisely what was done during the operation. An operation where fatty tissue was removed will take a few days longer to heal than one in which only a sliver of skin was removed.

And some aspects of the recovery are under your control. Keeping your head elevated while resting will speed up recovery time. Cold packs also help. Be sure to take any medication your surgeon prescribes in order to reduce the risk of infection and speed the healing process. Keep your eyes out of the sun — if you need to go outside on sunny days, use dark-tinted sunglasses.
