Brow lifts are popular with stars, everyone else
The brow lift is an increasingly popular way to maintain a younger look. Even Cameron Diaz is reported to be going for a brow lift and fillers, and British reality TV stars are getting so much of the same plastic surgery procedures — including brow lifts — that some complain they’re starting to look alike.
A brow lift may be combined with fillers and other procedures to create a younger look for the whole face. There are slightly different variations of the procedure that can be used for men and women in order to keep their faces looking conventionally masculine or feminine. Another variation, the eyebrow lift, helps the recipient look not just younger, but more wide awake, cheerful and energetic.
A brow lift can even be a medical necessity if sagging skin is obstructing vision. In such cases, you may be able to get it paid for through insurance.
How an endoscope is used
The key to the modern brow lift is a device called an endoscope, which has a very small light and camera at the end of a flexible tube. A surgeon inserts it through a small incision in the skin of your forehead in order to study the attachment of skin and muscle directly. What the surgeon sees will allow him or her to customize your brow lift, observing the specific pattern of aging and deciding what moves will reverse it.
Preparing for the procedure and the recovery
As with any cosmetic surgery, you should stop smoking for about two weeks before the procedure, because nicotine constricts blood vessels and slows healing. You should also avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and herbal supplements. After the surgery, you’ll need pain medication for a few days. Recovery time for a brow lift is usually about two weeks, but you shouldn’t do anything strenuous that might raise your blood pressure for at least three weeks. To help yourself heal faster, sleep in a lounge chair and get one of those neck pillows people use on airplanes, so as to keep your head elevated. Don’t take aspirin or eat anything that takes a lot of chewing.
