LASER AESTHETICS

Dr. Freeman, the top Charlotte facial plastic surgeon, has been using lasers for aesthetic purposes for over 30 years. He has authored several key publications on the subject and has taught physicians throughout the world the physics, methodology, and process of using lasers of various wavelengths that employ what is known as selective photothermolysis. Selective photothermolysis allows lasers to treat different colors that affect the skin to improve aesthetics safely and effectively.

Ablative CO2 resurfacing targets water in the epidermis (selective photothermolysis) with very little thermal injury to the dermis. This laser system is very effective and improves many different aesthetic skin issues, which is why it has its own section. Dr Freeman uses several other lasers; all of which employ the selective photothermolysis concept to target different aesthetic issues of the skin. The pulsed dye laser uses yellow light energy to selectively target red skin issues. That is why it is effective against rosacea, cherry angiomas, spider angiomas, small venous malformations, isolated dilated capillaries and venular malformations (port wine stains). All lasers can rarely cause scarring or pigmentation issues, but these problems are rare. These treatments can be done without the need for anesthesia. Most patients see significant improvement after one treatment but at times may need more than one treatment. The Q-switched Nd:YAG is able to transmit two different wavelengths again using the principles of selective photothermolysis to target brown lesions of the epidermis and dermis. That makes this laser very good at removing lentigines (sun spots) as well as treating less common problems such as café au lait spots and nevus de Ota. The laser is also good for tattoo removal, although tattoos typically require multiple treatments and red and black ink is the easiest to remove. All lasers can rarely cause scarring or pigmentation issues, but these problems are rare. These treatments can be done without the need for anesthesia, although with tattoos topical lidocaine is recommended. Most patients see significant improvement after one treatment but at times may need more than one treatment. The SmoothBeam laser targets oil glands in the deeper part of the skin known as the dermis. This laser is very effective at treating acne vulgaris (the more common form of acne) but not cystic acne. It can also treat sebaceous gland hyperplasia. All lasers can rarely cause scarring or pigmentation issues, but these problems are rare. These treatments can be done without the need for anesthesia. Most patients see significant improvement after one treatment but at times may need more than one treatment.
