Lip augmentation and lip lifts

Types of lip enhancement

According to the popular cosmetic surgery website realself.com, 92% of those who get lip augmentation and 85% of those who get lift lips rate them as “worth it.” Lip enhancement is a way to make subtle but meaningful improvements to your appearance. Two common types of lip enhancement are lip augmentation and lip lifts. A facial plastic surgeon can tell you which one is right for you.

Minor and major lip augmentation

If you only need to make your lips look a little bit fuller, the easiest way to do that is to make them be a little bit fuller by injecting them with a filler, such as body fat or hyaluronic acid products like Restylane. If you need a bigger improvement, the surgeon may use a dermal allograft, in which dermal collagen is transplanted into your lips.

You will recover more quickly from a filler injection than from a dermal allograft — in the case of an injection, the swelling wears off after one or two days. The advantage of a dermal allograft is that it’s permanent — the collagen, with no skin cells of its own, is easily incorporated into your own tissue. Ask your facial plastic surgeon for more details.

A lip lift

The purpose of a lip lift isn’t to add volume to the lips, but to obtain the perfect balance between the upper and lower lips in cases where the upper lip is a little too narrow. The goal is for the upper lip to take up about a third of the space between the base of the nose and the tip of the chin. To do this, the surgeon makes a gull-wing-shaped incision under the nose, removing excess skin and tightening the muscles, which brings out the upper lip and creates the appearance of fuller lips.

A lip lift can usually be performed in the surgeon’s office. There is only a little swelling and bruising. Don’t put on makeup until the visible sutures have been taken out, which will be done in five or six days. There shouldn’t be any visible scarring, but if there is, the surgeon can take care of it with a laser treatment.
