Before Neck Lift Surgery

Dr. Freeman will assess the thickness, texture, and elasticity of the skin, and the severity of the patient’s wrinkles and folds. The hairline will be examined to determine where incisions can be placed. Facial structure will be carefully considered and surgery individually tailored, each patient benefiting from Dr. Freeman’s years of experience dedicated exclusively to aesthetic facial surgery.

Some patients let their hair grow to allow the incisions to be easily covered as they heal. Anyone who wishes to lose more than 15 pounds and maintain this new weight should discuss this during the initial consultation.

The Procedure

Depending on the degree of aging of the neck Dr. Freeman will recommend an incision under your chin and/or an incision around your ear. Many younger patients need an incision under the chin only, this procedure is called a medial platysmaplasty. These patients need no skin removed, just recontouring and tightening of the tissues and muscles in the mid- neck. Many older patients require both or just an incision around the lower part of the ear, this is called a neck lift.

Dr. Freeman will hide the incision for a neck lift in the contour of your ear, then extend the incision around the earlobe and back into your hairline. Following surgery, these incisions can be easily concealed by hair or with makeup. After the skin and muscle have been repositioned up and back for a neck lift, the excess skin is removed. The deeper tissues of the neck will also be repositioned to provide natural-looking rejuvenation. A small incision beneath the chin may be used to aid in lipo-sculpting the fatty tissue and smoothing the cord-like structures of the underlying muscle in the neck. Neck lifts are often performed in conjunction with a face lift in Charlotte, NC.

Recovery

A pressure dressing will be removed the first day after surgery for both a neck lift and a medial platysmaplasty. You will be provided with a complete set of instructions to follow before and after surgery to help ensure that incisions heal as well as possible.

Most patients find that they are comfortable returning to work 7-10 days after their neck lift/medial platysmaplasty in North Carolina. However, it is probably best to let 6 weeks elapse after surgery before scheduling any major social events such as a wedding.

Alternatives

While a neck lift/medial platysmaplasty procedure performed by Dr. Freeman will create significantly smoother, more pleasing contours to your neck, it is not designed to address conditions such as sagging eyebrows, fatty deposits in the eyelids, wrinkles around the mouth, jowls, or mid-face sagging. Conditions such as these are improved based on individual needs using other surgical procedures such as a Segmental Endoscopic Brow Lift, a lower lid: SOOF lift blepharoplasty– the “Gold Standard” for lower lid blepharoplasty or a deep plane lift using a malar pad lift. Dr. Freeman invented the Segmental endoscopic brow lift as well as the SOOF lift blepharoplasty and published the “Endoscopic Malar Pad Lift” in the mid ’90s, a procedure he incorporated into his deep plane lifts ever since.
