What Is Laser Resurfacing?

Patients with damaged skin and wrinkles – whether caused by age, sun exposure, heredity, lifestyle, or acne – can benefit from ablative CO2 laser resurfacing. This advanced treatment removes the epidermis (outer skin layer), which is then regenerated by the underlying dermis, revealing new, younger-looking skin. Ablative CO2 laser resurfacing can be performed on the entire face or specific areas. The laser also produces a tightening effect on the skin, which is highly beneficial, especially near the lower eyelids.

Consultation & Preparation for Laser Skin Resurfacing Banner

Consultation & Preparation for
Laser Skin
Resurfacing

During the first consultation, Dr. Freeman takes into account the patient’s skin color, thickness, texture, and age to determine whether or not an individual is a good candidate for ablative CO2 laser resurfacing. He also evaluates the amount of sun damage or scarring, medical history, skin care regimen, and expectations for the results.

After a physical examination and discussion, Dr. Freeman provides pre-treatment instructions, advising patients to stop using products containing retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or vitamin C for a week or two before the procedure to avoid irritation. Protecting the skin from sun exposure is also recommended. Our laser treatment requires no special preparation except for arriving with a clean face, free of makeup, lotions, and other products.

Laser Resurfacing
Procedure:
Step-by-Step

The area to be treated is thoroughly cleaned and prepped. Special protection is put in place to shield the eyes from the laser. The machine settings are adjusted based on the depth of resurfacing planned.

A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to numb the skin. Lidocaine injections are also commonly used when small areas are targeted. For full-face procedures, patients may need general anesthesia to ensure maximum comfort and avoid painful sensations.
Dr. Freeman methodically guides the laser over the skin. Each pass of the device vaporizes ultra-thin layers of tissue. The laser removes damaged or aged cells to reveal a newer skin texture. Multiple passes are made to achieve the desired depth of penetration.
A cooling spray or cold air is continuously applied to the skin. It protects the face from burns and minimizes side effects like swelling or scabbing between passes.
At the end of the procedure, the treated area is cleaned and dressed with ointment and bandages to begin the healing process. The patient is given comprehensive aftercare instructions to restore their skin tone.

Additional Treatments: Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable gels that add volume under the skin. They can plump lips, fill facial folds and wrinkles, and contour other areas of the face for a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers may include hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, and other substances. The effects of most fillers last 6-12 months. Over time, the body absorbs the material, and repeat injections are needed to maintain results. Together with laser resurfacing treatment, dermal fillers can counteract skin aging and restore youthful contours.

Recovery After
Laser Resurfacing

Dr. Freeman and his staff give each patient written instructions to follow before and after their resurfacing. These guidelines speed healing and improve results. Most patients can return to work within 10-14 days after laser resurfacing. The average person experiences a period of erythema (redness of the skin similar to a windburn) that lasts about six weeks to 3 months after the procedure. Appropriate use of make-up and sunscreen may help hide the redness until it fades. Patients can call Dr. Freeman and his staff to ask questions at any time after surgery.

Benefits of
Laser Treatments

Laser resurfacing helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on the face and neck. The laser removes the superficial layers of damaged tissue, promoting collagen production. This allows new, smoother skin to replace the old cells that have been eliminated.
The CO2 laser vaporizes the scarred tissue on the skin’s surface. As the skin heals, increased collagen production may help fill out depressed areas so they become less noticeable. Laser resurfacing is effective at reducing various types of acne scarring.
This treatment destroys abnormal skin cells with uneven pigmentation. As the face or neck heals, it should have a more uniform skin tone and color, which can reduce the appearance of discoloration and age spots.
The CO2 laser may destroy precancerous skin lesions known as actinic keratoses. These rough, scaly patches are caused by years of sun exposure. Eliminating actinic keratoses can stop them from turning into skin cancer. The laser penetrates deep into the tissues to vaporize the lesions.
The CO2 laser stimulates collagen remodeling and skin tightening. As the skin heals, it regrows with better texture and less visible pores, giving the face a youthful appearance.
