How to manage a SOOF lift blepharoplasty

The SOOF lift blepharoplasty

A SOOF lift blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a little change to the face that can make you look a lot younger, and it usually involves less swelling than a typical cheek lift. As we age, not only do crow’s feet form around the corners of our eyes, but a tiny deposit of fat under our eyelids called the suborbicular oculi fat (or SOOF) sinks to the tops of our cheeks as the fascial layer of tissue, which holds it in place, relaxes. This makes the eyes look wider and creates puffy areas underneath them.

The older approach to fixing this was for a surgeon to perform an open lower lid blepharoplasty, making an incision under the lashes of the lower lid, lifting the skin and muscle and taking the fat out completely. This does get rid of the wrinkles and puffiness, but the absence of the deposit of fat makes the lower eyelid and tear trough look hollow. Sometimes the doctor would replace it with another lump of fat taken from a different part of the body, but since the underlying problem — that the fascial layer was too loose to hold it in place — hadn’t been fixed, this could lead to new problems.

A better kind of eyelid surgery

This is why the best facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte came up with a better way to perform lower eyelid blepharoplasty. He developed the SOOF lift blepharoplasty, in which the surgeon makes the initial incision on the inside of the eyelid, lifts the SOOF back into place and tightens the fascial layer to hold it there and bring back the original appearance of the eyes. A SOOF lift blepharoplasty makes the whole mid-face area look younger.

You’ll need to quit smoking for a few weeks before the procedure, to allow your body to recover faster. You’ll need someone to help you with day-to-day tasks for the first few days after surgery. The stitches should come out after five days. You’ll probably need some ointment to keep the skin from drying out. Ask your surgeon for more information about managing recovery.
