A successful teen rhinoplasty
(The following is a dramatization.)
Samantha first decided she wanted teen rhinoplasty when she was fourteen. She’d always thought her nose was just a little too big and prominent, but she didn’t start feeling self-conscious about it until she started dating.
She asked around, but was told she wouldn’t be old enough for teen rhinoplasty for another year. Her parents waited for her to get through what they assumed was a phase. By the time she was fifteen and a half, she was a little less self-conscious, but still felt like a smaller nose would improve her face a lot.
The hardest part wasn’t the preparation, but the recovery. She had to keep her lips and mouth moisturized since she was breathing through them, she had to stay out of the sun, no pullovers… there was a lot to keep track of.
When the cast first came off, Samantha couldn’t help feeling that something was wrong. Her nose was still swollen to the point where it looked bigger than it had before. Her surgeon assured her this was normal, and to wait at least a few more months. When the swelling finally went down, her nose was down to the size she wanted it to be. It took some getting used to her new look, but she found herself feeling a lot more confident around other people.
Someone who didn’t need teen rhinoplasty
15-year-old Sarah had a friend, or at least a close acquaintance who acted friendly, who persuaded her that she’d be a lot prettier if her nose were just a little smaller. One day Sarah, who had never seemed particularly bothered by any aspect of her face, came home and announced to her parents that she wanted a teen nose job.
The more she talked with the Charlotte, NC surgeon, the more Sarah realized that it made no sense to permanently alter her appearance in the hope of winning the approval of someone she’d only met this year and would probably say goodbye to after high school.
Sarah wanted to know why the surgeon had talked her out of teen rhinoplasty, since it had meant talking himself out of thousands of dollars. He explained that his first concern had to be his patients — and that, in any case, it was better in the long run to make sure all his customers were satisfied.
