An unusual candidate for teen nose surgery
(The following is a dramatization.)
I wouldn’t have thought of my son as a candidate for teen nose surgery. I personally think he’s handsome, of course, but, well, he’s never prided himself on his looks. It turned out rhinoplasty was useful anyway.
You see, my son… well, he’s not a bully, but he has been in a few fights. I’d say “you should see the other guy,” or guys, or in one case a girl who turned out not to have been kidding about that black belt… I’m getting sidetracked. The main thing is, he’s gotten a lot better behaved, but parts of his face still look a little banged up, especially his lips and nose.
As I said, he’s not exactly sensitive about his looks, but as he’s been getting older, he’s started snoring. Sometimes he starts making this sort of choking sound with his nose, and then he wakes up and can’t get back to sleep again. It’s affecting his ability to concentrate in class. The doctor says he has sleep apnea caused by a deviated septum, which has been getting worse as his features mature. He says I should get medical rhinoplasty, because breathing problems can lead to other problems later on.
Straightening a septum
It turns out that straightening out a deviated septum is a basic part of any rhinoplasty. We’re scheduling it for just after the start of summer break, so he can have plenty of time to recover while still being able to have some fun this summer.
The hardestpart of teen nose surgery is probably going to be keeping him inside during the recovery and out of the sun — apparently a healing nose is prone to sunburn. We’ll also have to keep him from doing anything that could raise the blood pressure in his head. And of course we’re going to have to make sure he keeps his hands and everything else away from his nose until it’s fully healed. That includes sweaters, T-shirts and anything else that gets pulled over the face.

Many of his patients have already gotten nose jobs from other surgeons and are seeking revision rhinoplasty to improve them.
