Nose jobs serve many purposes

The most popular facial plastic surgery

Today, rhinoplasty or nose jobs is the most popular of all the different kinds of facial plastic surgery. In 2014, 150,000 people underwent rhinoplasty. These days, stars who get rhinoplasty openly admit as much without bothering to pretend otherwise.

Some of the common reasons for a nose job are to reduce a nasal hump, change the size of the tip of the nose or the direction in which it points, or repair a deviated septum — but every nose job is different, starting with a unique nose and ending (we hope) with the swelling gone down and the patient with the nose he or she wants. Sometimes nose jobs are performed to improve on the results of previous nose jobs. This is called a revision rhinoplasty, and it requires particular skill on the part of the surgeon. It is generally best (mortifying though it may be) for the patient to wait a year between nose jobs.

Every nose job is different

Every nose has its own unique topography. The skin is thicker in some places, and thinner in others. As a general rule, the thicker the skin, the thinner the cartilage underneath — and the cartilage and bone that form the structure of the nose are what the surgeon operates on. A good rhinoplasty surgeon will examine your nose inside and out, use computer imaging to show the possible outcomes so that you can describe precisely which one you want, and develop a procedure to do this. Look for a surgeon with a big gallery of before and after photographs of nose jobs, and one who has a state-of-the-art suite for operations.

And in some cases, the best way to improve the nose is by performing a chin implant. Accentuating the chin gives balance to the face, making a seemingly large nose look smaller and enhancing the effect of the nose job. About one in five patients seeking rhinoplasty should consider a chin implant. After surgery, there tends to be swelling, moderate bruising and sometimes temporary skin numbness. All of these effects go away fairly quickly — the bruising fades within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last for several weeks.
