Explanation as to why you cannot repair a deviated septum with rhinoplasty.

Repairing a deviated septum
One of the most common questions that our patients ask is, “Can you repair a deviated septum with rhinoplasty?” The short answer is no. A deviated septum, is a narrowing of the nasal passage, which can sometimes make breathing difficult. Typically, it is the result of the cartilage and/or bone in the area between the nostrils, being crooked or off-center. A deviated septum can range from being a minor inconvenience, to being severe enough to cause chronic breathing problems. Deviated septum is rather common, it is estimated that nearly 80% of all people have some degree of misalignment, most of us never even know it.

Explaining septoplasty
To correct a deviated septum, a facial plastic surgeon must use a completely different surgical procedure. Instead of a rhinoplasty, a procedure called septoplasty is required. The surgeon repositions and removes bone or cartilage from the space between the nostrils, in order to correct the misalignment and restore normal breathing. Internal splints or soft packing may need to be inserted into the nose to stabilize the septum as it heals. Rhinoplasty is a procedure that is performed to alter the shape and size of the nose. Septoplasty can be performed in an outpatient setting under local or general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes from 1-2 hours, with most patients healing within a week or two. Septoplasty is considered a medically necessary procedure, while rhinoplasty is considered to be a cosmetic procedure that is performed solely to enhance the appearance of the nose.
