Lower lid blepharoplasty helps patients who have under eye bags

Lower lid blepharoplasty, more commonly known as lower eyelid surgery, helps Charlotte, NC patients who have dark under eye bags. Under eye bags can be caused by a variety of different things, and some are permanent while others are temporary.

Temporary eye bags are typically associated with fatigue. People who have puffiness under the eyes are usually thought to be tired and worn out. Often, these bags will fade once a person gets more rest.

However, not all under eye bags are temporary. Many patients have permanent eye bags, which can make people feel self conscious about their appearance. Some people may have genetically puffy under eyes, while other develop them as they begin to age. Thankfully, lower lid blepharoplasty can remove under eye bags and help patients look and feel better.

Dr. Freeman’s SOOF Lift Blepharoplasty procedure

There are many different techniques surgeons can use when performing a lower lid blepharoplasty. Most techniques require the surgeon to remove the SOOF, the fat that is usually behind the eye but begins to slide and protrude and sometimes replace it with other fat. The risk with that is if the fat is too dense it can cause additional problems. If the doctor does not replace the removed SOOF with other fat, patients run the risk of having sunken or hollow looking eyes.

To combat this, Charlotte area surgeon Dr. Sean Freeman developed the SOOF Lift Blepharoplasty technique. He perfected this technique and has taught it to other physicians across the United States and even in Europe.

In the SOOF Lift method, Dr. Freeman does not remove the fat but lifts it back to where it is supposed to be and tightens the facial muscles to hold it in place. This method simply returns the patient’s eyes to how they were when they were younger, illuminating the risk of having sunken looking eyes after surgery. This approach also typically has less swelling than other methods.

Your surgeon will determine the best technique for you

Though Dr. Freeman developed the SOOF Lift method for under eye blepharoplasty, he may use a different technique if he believes it would be the better option for you. Your surgeon should discuss your options with you at your consultation after discussing your goals and a physical examination.
