Charlotte otoplasty from the most experienced surgeon
What is an otoplasty?
You are not alone if you have ever declared, “I need otoplasty for my big ears.” Cosmetic surgery of the ear is called otoplasty. This is a surgical procedure that alters the position, size, or proportion of the ears. Otoplasty can be performed at almost any age. Typically, the surgery is performed on children at the ages of 5 or 6, when the ear is approaching full development. Charlotte’s most experienced facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Sean Freeman, recommends that otoplasty be performed at his Charlotte, NC practice before a child starts school. The goal is to avoid your child experiencing the psychological trauma that can develop from teasing and/or bullying.
It is never too late for surgery, and adults are also excellent candidates for otoplasty. It is well documented that there are no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an adult. Just as with any other form of plastic surgery, the outcome of ear reshaping varies greatly, depending on type of changes that are desired. Most commonly, the end result is improved self-confidence and body image, especially in children and teenagers.

Common corrections that are achieved through otoplasty are:
1. If the ears stick out, the Doctor will perform ear pinning to flatten the ears against the head.
2. If an ear is positioned higher on one side than the other, ear repositioning can create symmetry.
3. Large, oversized ears can be corrected in conjunction with other ear issues.
Like other types of plastic surgery, otoplasty poses a number of risks such as bleeding, infection, and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Minor complications could include allergic reactions to surgical tape or other materials used during or after the procedure.
