Starting the spring with a new look

Although it still feels like January — or possibly mid-May, depending on what the weather happens to be doing this week — spring is coming. People will be spending more time out of doors, enjoying the return of warmth and sun. At about this time, you may be interested in a new look for yourself. The second most popular form of facial plastic surgery is rhinoplasty or the nose job.

The art of rhinoplasty has been steadily improving since the first nose jobs in India in the 6th century B.C. Depending on how this procedure is performed, it can do anything from reducing a hump on the bridge of the nose to altering the tip of the nose to fixing a deviated septum.

To alter the shape of the nose, the surgeon reshapes the bone and cartilage underneath the skin. He or she usually puts the incisions of the nose job inside the nose, where no one can see them. Doctors call this a closed rhinoplasty. In some cases, the incision has to be made on the outside. This is called open rhinoplasty, and the incision is usually made in the skin between the nostrils. In about one in five cases, a rhinoplasty may come with a chin implant, to give balance to the face.

After surgery, there will probably be some swelling and bruising, and possibly skin numbness. All of these effects will go away before too long. The bruising will fade within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last for several weeks. To get an idea of what long-term results to expect, look for a surgeon with a gallery of before and after rhinoplasty photographs on his or her Web site. If a rhinoplasty is performed to improve the results of a previous nose job, it is called a revision rhinoplasty. If you are considering this, you should wait for at least one year after the first rhinoplasty.

A good rhinoplasty surgeon can look at your nose and figure out the best way to perform the surgery. With the help of computer imaging, the surgeon can show you many different possible outcomes, allowing you to let him or her know exactly how you want your nose to look once the swelling has gone down.
