Two kinds of lip enhancement

Getting the perfect pucker

If you look in the mirror and feel as though your lips are too thin or too long, or just look not quite right, you may be a candidate for lip enhancement. Two common types of cosmetic surgery performed on the lips are lip augmentation and the lip lift. An experienced plastic surgeon can tell you which one is right for you.

Lip augmentation

If your lips just need to be made to look slightly fuller, this can be done with an injectable filler. Hyaluronic acid products and fat are among the fillers used. Ask your surgeon for details about the fillers. The procedure requires a little topical anesthetic before the injection, and the swelling wears off after one or two days.

The surgeon may decide that what you need is a dermal allograft. This is a procedure that has many medical applications, and involves the transplanting of donated skin tissue. All tissue donors are carefully screened before being allowed to donate. Specialized medical sources within the U.S. remove the cells from donated skin tissue, leaving behind the collagen of the dermis, which is ready to be transplanted. If you receive a dermal allograft, it will take several days before you are ready to return to work, but the dermis will naturally become a part of your own tissue.

The lip lift

Most patients look better when the upper lip takes up about a third of the space between the base of the nose and the tip of the chin. If the upper lip is too long, a lip lift may be in order. This involves making a gull-wing-shape incision under the nose, removing excess skin and tightening the muscles, which brings out the upper lip and creates the appearance of fuller lips.

In most cases, this can be taken care of in the office, with minimal sedation. There is only a little swelling and bruising. Makeup should not be applied until visible sutures have been taken out, which will be done in five or six days. There should not be any noticeable scarring, but if there is, the same surgeon can taken care of it using a laser procedure.
