How lip enhancements are done

Lip augmentation and lip lifts

With Hollywood stars openly talking about the lip enhancements they have used, you may be wondering if lip enhancements

is right for you — especially if you have ever felt that your lips are too long, not full enough, or just wrong. Two common types of cosmetic lip surgery are lip augmentation and lip lift. An experienced plastic surgeon can tell you which one will work in your case.

An injectable filler can be used for lip augmentation if your lips only need to be made to look a little bit fuller. Hyaluronic acid products and fat are some of the fillers used. The procedure requires a little topical anesthetic before the injection, and the swelling wears off after one or two days. Ask your surgeon for more details. In other cases, augmentation may require a dermal allograft. This is a procedure in which donated skin tissue is transplanted, and it has many medical applications. Specialized medical sources in the U.S. screen the donors and remove the cells from donated tissue, leaving behind the collagen of the dermis, which is ready to be transplanted. If you receive a dermal allograft, it will take several days before you can return to work, but the dermis will become a part of your own tissue.

A lip lift is a different operation. It corrects the balance between the upper and lower lips. Most patients look better when the upper lip takes up about a third of the space between the base of the nose and the tip of the chin. In a lip lift, the surgeon makes a gull-wing-shaped incision under the nose, removing excess skin and tightening the muscles, which brings out the upper lip and creates the appearance of fuller lips.

In most cases, this can be done in the office, with minimal sedation. There is only a little swelling and bruising. Makeup should not be applied until visible sutures have been taken out, which will be done in five or six days. There should not be any visible scarring, but if there is, the surgeon can take care of it with a laser procedure.
