Charlotte, NC residents who are planning on undergoing a nose job procedure may often forget to plan for the rhinoplasty surgery recovery. Saving money for the surgery, researching and choosing a doctor, and deciding what results are desired, are all an important part of planning for the operation. However, the recovery time following a rhinoplasty is just as an important and should not be overlooked.
Some of the pre-surgery advise should continue in to recovery
A few weeks before surgery, patients should avoid taking anything that could act as a blood thinning agent. Smokers should stop smoking and avoid nicotine and certain medications, such as aspirin, should not be taken. Patients should also avoid salt before surgery. These agents can affect the surgery and the recovery, so once the surgery is over, patients should not begin smoking again or taking certain medications until their surgeon clears them.
Typically recovery time varies by patient
There is no set time frame for recovery following rhinoplasty. Patients whose rhinoplasty procedure was performed via an open rhinoplasty will typically have a longer recovery time than those who had a closed rhinoplasty.
All patients should expect swelling and bruising following the surgery with the bruising healing in seven to ten days. The swelling will take a bit longer to go down and can last a few weeks to a few months. Most of the time the swelling will reduce enough that most people will not notice it in a few weeks, but it may persist for a while after.
Be sure to follow your surgeon’s advise for rhinoplasty recovery
Patients should follow their surgeon’s instructions following their nose job surgery. Since taking aspirin is discouraged following surgery, patients should only take prescribed pain killers. Be prepared for the first few days after surgery to be the hardest so plan to take it easy and relax for a while after the procedure.
Keeping blood pressure away from the head is important. This means no bending over, and patients should keep their head elevated as much as possible. Patients should also plan to avoid going in public or make sure they are washing hands regularly to avoid germs that can lead to illnesses. Sneezing or blowing the nose should be avoided after surgery and it can damage the delicate nose.
Lymphatic drainage massage is sometimes utilized to help reduce swelling following surgery. However, be sure to consult the surgeon before having this massage. Ice packs can also sometimes be used to help with swelling and pain, but again, your doctor should be consulted before use.
