Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular forms of facial plastic surgery, second only to eyelid surgery. It covers a variety of procedures that can do anything from changing the size of the tip of the nose, making it point in a slightly different direction, reducing a nasal hump or repairing a broken nose. By straightening the septum, it can correct sleep apnea and other breathing problems.
There are two kinds of rhinoplasty — open and closed. In both cases, the surgeon changes the shape of the bone and cartilage under the skin in order to reshape the nose. In a closed rhinoplasty, the doctor makes the incisions inside the nose, hiding them from view and making sure the result looks completely natural. If this is not possible, the surgeon will perform an open, in which an incision is made on the outside of the nose — usually between the nostrils. The greater the surgical alteration, the more skill is required of the surgeon.
After surgery, there will usually be swelling in the nose, along with some bruising. The bruising will fade within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last for several weeks. You will not be able to see exactly what your new nose looks like until the swelling has gone down. If you are not satisfied, it is possible to perform a nose surgery to improve the results of a previous nose job. This is called a revision, and there are surgeons for whom it is most of their practice. If you are considering this, you should wait for at least one year after the first node surgery To be sure of getting the best results the first time, look for a surgeon with a gallery of before and after rhinoplasty photographs on his or her Web site.
A good surgeon can figure out the best way to perform the surgery on your particular nose, and will pay attention to your wishes. The surgeon can use computer imaging to show you various possible outcomes of the surgery, allowing you to describe precisely the results you want from the operation. Look for a surgeon with a state-of-the-art suite for operations.
