Rhinoplasty in Charlotte
One of the most common questions among rhinoplasty patients is, “Can you repair a deviated septum with rhinoplasty?” You cannot repair a deviated septum with rhinoplasty. A deviated septum, is defined as a narrowing of the nasal passage. It can be of varying degrees, and becomes a problem when it makes breathing difficult. Most commonly, it is the result of the cartilage and/or bone in the area between the nostrils, being crooked or off-center. It is estimated that nearly 80% of all people have some degree of misalignment, and most of them never even know it.

Septoplasty is the answer
To proper procedure to correct a deviated septum, is a surgical procedure called septoplasty. This is when a facial plastic surgeon repositions and removes bone or cartilage from the space between the nostrils. The objective is both functional and aesthetic, it is to correct the misalignment and restore normal breathing. Post-surgery, internal splints or soft packing may need to be inserted into the nose to stabilize the septum as it heals. This is different from rhinoplasty, which is a procedure that is performed to alter the shape and size of the nose. Septoplasty is generally performed in an outpatient setting, and under local or general anesthesia. Most procedures take about one to two hours. Most patients have experienced significant healing within a week or two. Another point of difference between the two surgeries is that septoplasty is considered a medically necessary procedure, while rhinoplasty is considered to be a cosmetic procedure. Rhinoplasty is performed solely for the purpose of enhancing the appearance of the nose.
