Lip enhancement by Charlotte’s best facial plastic surgeon

The effects of a lip enhancement procedure

Lip augmentation or enhancement is a facial plastic surgery procedure that can provide you with fuller, plumper lips.  The most commonly used method of lip enhancement is an injectable dermal filler.  There are many types of fillers that may be injected into your lips and around your mouth.  The most common filler contains hyaluronic acid.  This is the filler preferred by Charlotte’s best facial plastic surgeon, Dr. M. Sean Freeman for use during his lip enhancement procedures.  These types of fillers are safer and the effects last longer than earlier types of fillers.

Lip augmentation

If a patient wants lip augmentation surgery, Dr. Freeman prefers to use a dermal allograft.  This is human tissue that is transplanted from one person to another.  Dermal allografts have been used for many years.  Dr. Freeman only uses dermal allografts procured from specialized sources within the United States.  These sources are closely regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the dermal allografts come from tissue banks in the U.S.  At these tissue banks, the donor skin is surgically removed and all tissue donors are rigorously screened by the tissue bank.  Dr. Freeman performs lip augmentation surgery in his state-of-the-art operation at his clinic, The Center for Facial and Plastic Laser Surgery in Charlotte NC.  Most patients are able to return to work within a few days.  The allograft dermal tissue is used to enhance the soft tissue.  The allograft dermis can be rolled, stacked or folded to produce the enhancement.  An allograft dermis eventually becomes part of the patient’s own tissue and will perform like healthy, normal tissue.

A lip lift for lip enhancement

There are times when Dr. Freeman will recommend a lip lift to achieve appropriate facial balance.  Most individuals will look better if there is a 1/3 to 2/3 relationship between the length of the lower lip as compared to the upper lip.  When the upper lip is too long it may be out of proportion to the lower lip.  Lip augmentation is also a possibility if a patient feels their lips are too thin.  Dr. Freeman performs this procedure under minimal sedation in his clinic in Charlotte NC.  He will first make an incision under the nose so it is hidden.  Dr. Freeman then removes any excess skin and tightens the corresponding muscles, if necessary.  There is usually minimal bruising and swelling and Dr. Freeman removes the visible sutures within five to six days following surgery and makeup may then be applied.  There is typically very little scarring, however, if a patient desires, Dr. Freeman can use a laser procedure to improve the scar’s appearance.
