Lower eyelid surgery information for Charlotte, NC patients

Lower eyelid surgery targets bags under the eyes

Lower eyelid surgery is an option for Charlotte, NC residents who have prominent puffiness under the eyes. Under eye puffiness is often equated with people being tired and run down. However, that is not always true. Many people notice their eyes getting puffy as they age. Others still were born with bulging skin under their eyes. Surgeons can perform a variety of procedures to correct this for patients and leave them looking younger and refreshed. Surgeons will discuss options with patients and determine the best procedure to help them reach their goals after a consultation.

Open Lower Lift

One common lower eyelid surgery is called an Open Lower Lift. This procedure involves the surgeon making an incision on the outside of the eye and removing fat from the area. Though this technique may be the best option for some patients, it does have some risks if the surgeon is inexperienced. One thing doctors need to be careful to avoid if using this technique is to make sure patients are not left with sunken looking eyes since the fat under the eye has been removed. Some doctors may insert fat from other areas of the body into this area to avoid that. However, that too poses its own risks.

The SOOF Lift Blepharoplasty procedure was developed by Dr. Freeman

Charlotte area facial plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Freeman developed a new technique that gives patients good results. Dr. Freeman has gone on to teach this technique to physicians across the United States and in Europe. This procedure is the SOOF Lift Blepharoplasty.

SOOF stands for suborbicularis oculi fat, which is the fat that sits behind the eye. As a person ages, this may start to migrate down the face and protrude out, giving people permanent bags under their eyes. Dr. Freeman’s technique involves making an incision inside the eyelid, then lifting the SOOF fat from where it has settled back to where it belongs. He then tightens the fascial layer to hold the SOOF where it belongs. This technique prevents people from having sunken under eyes and stitches can typically be removed within five days.

Patients will experience bruising and swelling following the procedure. Bruising generally fades within a week with the swelling going down in one to two weeks. However, patients who undergo the SOOF procedure typically experience less swelling than those who had an Open Lift.

Patients may experience sensitivity to light and should protect their eyes from the sun until fully healed. Patients should avoid wearing contacts and be careful when putting on glasses so as not to bump their eyes too much. Rubbing the eyes should also be avoided until fully healed.
