Some frequently asked questions about eye surgery
Here are some frequently asked questions about eye surgery, along with the answers.
Is eye surgery something that a facial plastic surgeon will do?
That depends on what you mean. Surgery on the eyeball itself, to repair damage or improve its function, would only be done by an eye surgeon. On the other hand, surgery on the eyelids, either for medical or cosmetic reasons, is very much within the realm of facial plastic surgery.
I’m interested in eyelid surgery. Is it covered by insurance or Medicare?
Only if it’s for medical reasons.
What procedures are available for eyelid surgery?
There are different surgical procedures for the upper and lower eyelids.
Surgery on the upper eyelid, or upper eyelid blepharoplasty, is for treating crow’s feeet. It involves making an incision on the upper eyelid, within the natural fold so that it’s hidden when healed. The surgeon then removes excess skin, muscle and fat. There is usually some swelling and bruising for a week or so afterward. To fully treat crow’s feet, BOTOX or laser resurfacing may be needed along with this.
Surgery on the lower eyelid is called lower eyelid blepharoplasty. One effective form of this is the SOOF lift blepharoplasty, which involves lifting the suborbicularis oculi fat, or SOOF, back into position to correct puffiness under the eyes
Are there any other procedures I should know about?
Dark circles under the eyes can be treated with laser procedures.
