Find out if an eye lift is right for you

The basics of eye lifts

An upper eyelid blepharoplasty, or eye lift, is a cosmetic medical procedure that creates a naturally youthful, wide-awake and energetic look for the eyes. By removing only a tiny bit of skin and tissue, it lifts and smoothes the eyelids while still letting them do their crucial job of protecting the eyes. By raising a sagging eyelid, an eye lift can also improve peripheral vision. Medicare will sometimes cover a blepharoplasty performed for medical reasons.

A surgeon performs an eye lift by making an incision along the natural fold of the upper eyelid so that the normal contour of the eye will hide the incision. He or she then removes excess skin, fat and muscle. This is sometimes accompanied by lower lid surgery, a brow lift, laser skin resurfacing, injectables, other cosmetic treatments. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, so you will be unconscious for the procedure and will need someone to drive you home afterward.

After the surgery, you can expect some mild swelling. For some people, the swelling will go away in the first week, while for others it will take several weeks. There may also be some itchiness and dryness, which will also go away. The stitches will dissolve or be taken out in about five days. Bruising should disappear in seven to 10 days, and can safely be hidden by makeup during that time. Ask your doctor about any post operative concerns you may have during your initial consultation.

Be sure to speak with the most experienced facial plastic surgeon in the area to determine if you should undergo this procedure. There are some medical problems, such as blurry vision, dry eye, double vision, diabetes or thyroid problems, which make an eye lift a bad idea. And not everyone in Charlotte who appears to need an eye lift does. In some cases, what appears to be a drooping of the upper eyelid may be caused by sagging skin on the brow. An experienced facial plastic surgeon can determine if this is the case, and can also perform a brow lift to correct the problem.
